When I take yoga classes around town, I find that the ones that I keep going back to are the classes that encourage community. There’s something special about when the teacher knows the names of all the students and when I can chat with other students before and after class. If you are looking for a yoga community, you can start by reaching out to people in your class or branching out to create your own circle. Here are some ways that can spark a brand new yoga community:
-
Start talking to the people that you see regularly in class
There are always people that come to the same classes that you do – Start talking to them and see if you have similar interests. You can always chat about the class and share your experiences with them. Yoga is a great topic to discuss – There are so many poses to talk about! You’ll feel at ease walking into class when you can greet your fellow classmates with a smile.
-
Talk with the teacher after class
It really helps to feel connected to a yoga class when you create a relationship with your yoga teacher. When the teacher knows more about you, they can challenge you in class or modify the practice to fit your needs. Start a dialogue with them after class by asking them any yoga questions that you have. When the teacher recognizes your face, they will be happy to see you return to their class again and again.

Try out different studios to see what the community aspect is like
There’s plenty of yoga studios around – If you aren’t seeing the community that you want to see, try another yoga studio. Find a place that shares tea after class, has a bulletin board for locals and a staff that happily welcomes you in every time. There are always new experiences to try, so if you find yourself in a class where no one talks to each other, make the change to a more positive atmosphere.
-
Invite friends to come to the classes you like
Another way to motivate yourself to go to class is when you know your friend will be there! You can share your love of yoga by taking a friend to your favorite spot and letting them experience the class for the first time. I recently took my boyfriend to a yoga class, and in return he took me to try his favorite activity (bouldering). It was great for both of us to get out of our comfort zone and have fun in the process. When you bring in a small part of your own circle, you’ll feel more connected to each other and the class.

Start a class with your friends
My friends are always looking for something fun to do together, so why not start a yoga class? All you need is an open living room or a shady lawn. You can meet regularly, catch up with your friends and practice what you love to do. Your friends will be happy that you organized it and very excited that they can experience a class that’s designed just for your group.
