This month, I want to highlight one of my favorite yoga postures, spinal twist. Spinal twist is a pose that I do every day. While I definitely twist from side to side regularly while I’m sitting at my desk chair, I especially love to lie down and experience the full spinal twist. I can’t get over how relaxing it is. I usually end up practicing this pose at the end of my workday, as it relieves lower back pain that I get from sitting at my computer for awhile. Spinal twist also lengthens the spine, improves spinal flexibility and improves digestion. Spinal twist always helps me feel better and I look forward to the pose in every Let It Go yoga class. This month, I am planning on practicing this pose every day, and this is probably the easiest challenge that I have ever given myself, as I already do it daily and the pose feels. so. good.

If you would like to practice spinal twist with me this month, here is a step-by-step guide:

Lie down on your yoga mat. On your exhale, bring your right knee up to your chest. Inhale, and on this exhale, bring your right knee across your body and let it rotate gently until it reaches the ground or a prop. Place your left hand on the top of the right knee and extend the right arm along the floor at shoulder height. If you would like to, you can look towards your outstretched arm. Breathe deeply. When you feel like you have completed this side, exhale and release the pose so that you are back to laying flat on your mat. Repeat on the left side. Feel free to modify or use props to accommodate the needs of your body.

Do you have an all time favorite yoga pose? Let me know in the comments and I can feature it in an upcoming blog!
