For the last couple of months, I have been interested in learning all about mudras. I have known about a few mudras from teaching and attending yoga classes. I wanted to learn how to do more of the hand positions and find out the meaning of each mudra. My friends and I have been sending photos of our mudras to each other at the start of each week, so I decided to incorporate these mudras into my Instagram posts on Mondays. Please follow me @jessicaparsonsyoga to see my mudra journey and tag me in your mudra posts! I would love to learn from you and see your mudra experiences online.

Here is a list of my current favorite mudras. Comment below if you know of any mudras that I should try next!

Prithvi Mudra (Mudra of Earth)

In order to do this mudra, touch the ring finger and the tip of the thumb together. The other three fingers are stretched out. This mudra specializes in reducing physical weaknesses. It seems like a good mudra to know!

Lotus Mudra (Symbol of purity)

To create the bud of the lotus flower, place both hands in front of your chest and keep the edges of your hands and pads of your fingers touching each other. Open up your hands while keeping the tips of the little fingers and the outer edges of the thumbs together. This mudra belongs to the heart chakra and is the symbol for purity. It is said that “Love lives in the heart, together with goodwill, affection, and communication.” I definitely feel the love with this mudra!

Gyan Mudra (Mudra of Knowledge)

The index finger and thumb touch in this mudra with the other three fingers stretched out. This mudra is known to enhance knowledge. I’ll have to try it when I want to remember something important!

Pushpaputa Mudra (A handful of flowers)

To do this mudra, face your hands upwards and let each finger relax in the position. The focus of Pushpaputa mudra is openness and acceptance. I love how simple this mudra is to do and I love feeling open after I’ve practiced this hand position.

Vayu Mudra (Mudra of Air)

To do this mudra, press the thumb against the index finger while keeping the other three fingers straight. The mudra of air is said to prevent all diseases that occur due to the imbalance of the air. It also helps to build immunity. I love that this beautiful mudra has so many great benefits.

Atmanjali Mudra (Gesture of Prayer)

The first mudra that I learned from yoga! It is easy to do, just place your hands together in front of the chest, leaving a little space between your palms. From what I’ve learned, “Atmanjali mudra supports inner collection and creates harmony, balance, repose, silence and peace. This gesture activates and harmonizes coordination of the left and the right brain.” I’m glad that I learned this powerful mudra years ago since it has helped me in so many ways. Plus it is the perfect end to a yoga class. Namaste!

Do you know a mudra that I should practice next? Let me know!
