I’ve yet to meet anyone who isn’t my teacher – Byron Katie
After years of teaching Let It Go Yoga online, going back to teaching in person was a little daunting. Would I enjoy it? Would anyone want to come? Would I remember the timing or how to deliver the important message Let It Go Yoga offers? All of those thoughts ran through my mind as I prepared for my Let It Go Yoga class at the Carrillo Rec Center in Santa Barbara. To my delight (and surprise) the class filled in less than 24 hours!! I was so happy to see that old friends and new had signed up for a 6 week session.
Teaching Let It Go Yoga in downtown Santa Barbara is truly a full circle for me. In 1986, not far from the Rec center, I brought Let It Go Yoga to Santa Barbara for the first time. Looking back, I had those same fears as I mentioned above and many more but Santa Barbarans welcomed me in such positive ways that I have been teaching this class and have had a rewarding career as a yoga teacher ever since.
Now a little older, and hopefully wiser, I am incredibly grateful for the gifts that my yoga practice and teaching yoga has given me. Yoga has allowed me to share this practice and teach others ways to find better health, self awareness and the healing powers of the mind body connection. But as I looked around the room, I realize that yoga has brought me you! The students. Each and every student that I have had the honor of teaching has taught me something valuable. I admire the patience, courage and commitment I’ve seen in so many of you.
So thank you to all of the students who have crossed my path. Online and in person, each of you have made a difference in my life. And I know that each of you make a difference in the lives of so many others. By practicing yoga, you are showing by example how yoga can make a positive impact in our lives.
Namaste
Here’s a short list of some of things my students have taught me on and off the yoga mat:
- Flexibility is not the goal of yoga – everyone experiences the poses differently.
- There is no right way – only you can say what works for you.
- There are two sides to everything – maybe more!
- Be honest, share your story – letting go does not mean forgetting or denying.
- Be yourself – there is no need to be perfect.
- Letting go is the path of least resistance – go with the flow.
- There truly is a mind body connection – emotions and thoughts effect our health.
- Letting go can happen in a moment or can take time and practice.
- Yoga can unite people with different beliefs and backgrounds.
- When you respond differently to a situation that held power over you – you have let it go.
