Indigo (also called Royal Blue) is the color of the Sixth Chakra. It is also called the Third Eye (or Brow) Chakra or Ajna Chakra (in Sanskrit Ajna means “command”). The actual color indigo is named after the indigo dye derived from the plant Indigofera tinctoria. (It is interesting to note that the plant blooms with pink and violet flowers, but the green leaves are the ones used to make the dye!) As per Wikipedia, Marco Polo (13th century) was the first to report on the preparation of indigo in India. It is a rich and deep color, considered the color of deep inner knowing. When your Third Eye is “open” you can see AND understand, AND know… The Sixth Chakra is located in the brain, at the brow, above the base of the nose. It is closely tied to the pineal gland. French philosopher Rene Descartes (1596-1650) referred to this gland as the “seat of the soul”. He believed that the soul and the body interacted there.

The gift of this Chakra is seeing – both inner and outer worlds. Our ability to engage in self reflection and experience clear thought is closely tied to Anja Chakra. The Third Eye Chakra also enables us to examine ideas and see deeper meanings of the situations in our lives, and it also encompasses the ability to be mindful – moment by moment. The Third Eye is not only known to be the seat of wisdom, but also a seat of conscience. It promotes intuition and memory, pattern recognition and leaning skills.
To honor the Third Eye Chakra you could use indigo in your clothing, your home and office decor, as well as use these following gemstones in your jewelry: lapis lazuli, aquamarine, moonstone, amethyst, purple fluorite, and clear quartz crystal. Decorating your rooms with flowers like indigo colored irises is a beautiful idea as well! Or better yet – plant them in your gardens! Let that magic of indigo surround you! And how about eating some dark blue/purple foods – plums, eggplant, purple cabbage, red onion, red grapes and raisins, blueberries? Then there are the following essential oils – Frankincense, Lavender, Neroli, Juniper – that are considered beneficial for the Third Eye chakra.
You can also use some of the following affirmations or, as usual, come up with your own: “I am in touch with my inner guidance”; “I listen to my deepest wisdom”; ”My life moves with ease”; “I seek to learn from my life experiences”; “I am wise and intuitive”; “I trust my intuition”; “I am connected with my inner guide”; “I nurture my spirit”, ”I love and accept myself”; “All is well in my world”; “I am open to inspiration”.

In your Let It Go Yoga practice try focusing on your Third Eye during the opening meditation and see if the experience can be deepened and enhanced by imagining deep, rich, indigo colored space around you… and ask for deeper knowing and understanding. Mmmm… we all could use a little bit of that.
