Spring is here, so it feels like a great time to switch up my yoga routine. I’ve been craving a change in my yoga practice. I love being consistent in my practice, but I do need new things to incorporate into my flow, especially now that I workout at home. Some classes have started back in person, but I’ve in the habit of practicing in my home since the start of the pandemic. I created a list of ways to break away from my normal exercise routine, because sometimes it can be difficult to bring yourself to the mat. If you’d like to change things up with me, try out one of these tips during your next yoga session. I hope they bring a new perspective to your yoga flow.

1. Try a new style of yoga

If you always go for a challenging flow yoga class, try lying down and practicing Let It Go Yoga. If you need more of a mental break, find a class that specializes in meditation. There are so many options out there, and all yoga classes are beneficial for your body and mind. You might find that a new style is just what you need at this time.

2. Set a new intention

Give yourself an intention that you’ve never given yourself before. Can you think of one? I’m sure there’s one out there that you haven’t used just yet. Use it today!

3. Follow your body

If you’re tired of following a traditional yoga sequence, get out your yoga mat and follow what your body wants to do. You can start with some of your favorite poses, and maybe that will lead to something unexpected. You don’t have to follow any structure, just move around and notice how your body wants to stretch. It’s very rejuvenating to practice and I highly recommend it.

4. Practice outside of your routine

Do you normally practice every morning before breakfast? Try an evening yoga routine. I always feel like I won’t be able to practice yoga after dinner, but I tried it last week and it was much more satisfying than scrolling on my phone on the couch. If you think that there is something holding you back from practicing yoga, it could just be in your head! Challenge yourself to let go of that mind block and try it anyway.

5. Practice with a friend

One of the things that I miss the most about in person classes is sharing a yoga experience with a friend. If you feel the same way, invite a friend to practice with you. You could safely meet up or join the same online class, and then catch up afterwards. It’s a great way to hold yourself accountable to your yoga practice and bond with a friend over a shared activity.6. Add your own music

When I practice at home, I like to create a yoga experience especially for me. That includes my favorite poses, a perfectly timed Savasana and my own music taste. It’s easy to create a playlist for any mood that you’re feeling, so set aside some time to make one and then try it out on the mat!

7. Try out a new space

Take your yoga mat outside on a particularly beautiful day. Try out a new room in your home. Notice the change in lighting, sounds and room that you now have to practice. If you like it, change it! If it’s not for you, you’ll feel grateful to practice in your original space when you go back.

8. Give a difficult pose another chance

Did you swear to never attempt crow pose again after you first tried it years ago? Are you not ready to hold plank longer than 10 seconds? If you have preconceived notions about a certain pose, try it out again. You may notice that it’s easier than when you last tried it, or you may feel compelled to keep at it this time. At the very least, you can feel accomplished for giving it another shot.
